The Department of Parks and Recreation was established by ordinance in 1966. The Director is appointed by the Mayor, with the consent of the Council. The Department is organized into three areas: Historical Commission, Division of Parks & Forestry, and the Division of Recreation. The following is a breakdown of the responsibilities of each:

  • The Historical Commission's major functions are to uncover and preserve any material about the history of the community. They also work with township officials in the preservation of records and archives of the Township. Also, this area of the department promotes the preservation of historic buildings, monuments, and markers.
  • The Division of Parks & Forestry currently maintains 1859.45 acres of parkland which includes two aquatic facilities, two museums, and 23 community parks. These parks include 12 tennis courts, 2 platform tennis courts, 6 baseball fields, 12 softball fields, 10 soccer fields, 3 football fields, and 5 turf multi-purpose fields. The Division of Parks & Forestry also maintains approximately 10,000+ street trees and trees located in township parks and on township property. Lastly, this department is in charge of 53 school paths for snow removal and trimming of brush, 171 roadside visibility sites, 24 bus shelters, and 72 trash pickup sites.
  • Wayne Township's Division of Recreation offers a wide variety of year-round activities for all residents of the community. Activities include team sports, youth and adult instructional programs, bus trips, special events, and community programs.  Pool and lake membership, as well as tennis badges, can be obtained through the Recreation Division. Transportation for the elderly and disabled is available through the department’s year-round local fixed-route bus service.
