Letter from the Mayor
Dear Friends:
I begin this letter humbled with gratitude for the support and kindness of our community while I was undergoing cancer treatment. The many cards, prayers and good wishes for my recovery were overwhelming! I am thankful to report that I am in remission, feeling better than ever and ready to be your Mayor for the next four years! One of my many pleasures as Mayor is to highlight our municipal employees and as such, I want to acknowledge the excellent job they did during my illness. Their resilience and inner strength working tirelessly to maintain Wayne Township’s excellent service to our residents was truly remarkable! It was because of their dedication and professionalism that the Township functioned seamlessly.
It is also hard to believe that our Township and our nation are still being impacted by the pandemic which began over 18 months ago! It seems like things change on a daily basis, but our staff has reacted with ingenuity and innovation to consistently meet the needs of our community. Accordingly, I would like to recognize Mary Ann Orapello, our Health Officer, DCapt. Dan Daly, our OEM Coordinator and their dedicated staff and volunteers for once again providing our residents with essential COVID testing and vaccine clinics. Their unwavering efforts are a true testament to their commitment to our community.
Our annual budget allocates resources to a variety of Township priorities and programs to ensure the community’s security, enhance our resident’s quality of life and maintain Wayne’s facilities and infrastructure. Although we continue to experience the impact of the COVID 19 pandemic, this budget represents my continued commitment to prudent fiscal management while responding to our community’s highest priorities for service and capital needs. As such, I am pleased to announce that under the direction of Tim Roetman, the Director of Parks and Recreation, our all-inclusive playground at Shai Shacknai Memorial Park has been completed and children of all abilities have been enjoying this facility. Additional facets of our municipality that I am delighted to highlight are the numerous programs that we offer to our residents. Programs such as the summer concert series, Senior Olympics, dental clinics and rabies clinics. Additionally, there are two accomplishments which I am very proud of. Firstly, through the FEMA “Buy-out” program, the Township has purchased over 300 homes in flood prone areas and secondly, the Township has reached a settlement with Fair Share Housing, regarding our 3rd round Mount Laurel obligation that is appropriate for our community.
I want to express my appreciation to the Township Council; our dedicated employees; the men and women of our Police Department; the members of our Volunteer Fire Department and the members of the Wayne Memorial First Aid Squad for their steadfast commitment to our residents. Additionally, I would like to thank the members of the various Township Boards and Commissions; and all the volunteers who donate countless hours of their time for the betterment of our community. Finally, I’d like to welcome Sharyn Matthews, the Township’s new HR Director and Chris Tietjen, the Township’s new Business Administrator, as well as thank Neal Bellet for temporarily returning as our interim Business Administrator.

Dear Neighbors,
I begin this letter not only being honored to once again serve as the Council President for Wayne Township, but also as a member of our remarkable community. This past year, I believe that all of our citizens have come to realize how fortunate we are to have Mayor Christopher Vergano’s steadfast leadership. Even during his cancer treatment and the COVID pandemic, Mayor Vergano’s guidance enabled the Township’s administration and employees to continue to provide the high quality of services that our residents have come to expect. I believe that during this time of uncertainty, there was nothing uncertain about Wayne Township because of our Mayor! Accordingly, I want to thank Mayor Vergano for his unwavering dedication to all of us!
As we strive to remain fiscally responsible, the Council is focused on assisting the Mayor and his Administration with undertaking all measures necessary to continue to maintain Wayne Township as an exceptional place to live and raise a family. Even though our Township, state and country have faced many challenges, we continue to explore, develop and implement new ways to improve and maintain our vital community assets. Please know that the Council stays committed to promoting and providing our Township with conversational opportunities, to facilitate an informed community.
As such, on behalf of myself and my fellow Councilmembers I invite you to attend the Council Meetings and bring us your ideas, concerns and suggestions. If it is important to you, it is important to us. Please let us know how we may help you.

Stormwater Pollution
Pollution on streets, parking lots and lawns is washed by rain water into storm drains, which flow into streams and rivers and eventually into our drinking water supplies. Through storm water, fertilizer, oil, pesticides, detergents, pet waste, grass clippings and other debris can end up in our drinking water supplies.
As part of New Jersey’s initiative to keep our water clean and plentiful and to meet federal requirements, Wayne and other public agencies must adopt ordinances prohibiting various activities that contribute to storm water pollution. Breaking these rules can result in fines and penalties.
As a resident or business, it is important to know what you can do to protect our water:

Limit your use of fertilizer and pesticides:
- Do a soil test to see if you need fertilizer.
- Do not apply fertilizers if heavy rain is predicted.
- Look to alternatives to pesticides.
- If you use fertilizers and pesticides, follow the instructions on the label about how to correctly apply and make sure you properly store or discard any unused portions.
Properly use and dispose of hazardous products:
- Hazardous products include some household and commercial cleaning products, lawn and garden care products motor oil, antifreeze and paints.
- Do not pour any hazardous products down a storm drain.
- Recycle these items at the County Household Hazardous Waste Collection.

Please be aware of the following:
Pursuant to chapter #129 of the township code, in certain instances, the commercial landscaper, tree service provider, or the owner of the property where the tree work is to be performed must first apply for a tree removal permit from the department of parks and recreation before any trees are removed. The cost of this permit is $25.00
A municipal court summons with fines of up to $1,000 upon conviction of the ordinance violation will be imposed to the tree service provider if work is performed without proof of an approved township tree removal permit or if additional work beyond the scope of the approved permit is performed.
A permit is required for the removal of trees under the following situations:
- Removal of more than four (4) trees which are eight (8) inches or greater in diameter, but less than eighteen (18) inches in diameter, within the twelve (12) month period following the issuance of a permit from the department of parks and recreation.
- The removal of a single tree which is eighteen (18) inches or greater in diameter.
The removal of trees less than 8” in diameter does not require a tree removal permit.
Please understand that a municipal court summons will be issued to those persons or commercial landscapers/tree service providers found to be in violation of the township code chapter #129.
